Having an herb garden let’s you get back to nature and you can reap the benefits of what you grow. An herb garden is very inexpensive to start and what you grow in your garden it entirely up to you.

So what is an "herb" and how does it differ from a spice. An herb has been defined as any plant or plant part used as an ingredient for flavor, fragrance, and/or healing. So would also say that this definition could also apply to spices. Well let me tell you the difference between the two.  Herbs are usually defined as plants of temperate climates whose leaves are harvested for use. Spices on the other hand tend to be of tropical origin and we use their roots for things like ginger and we also use their flowers for cloves. We also use the seeds from herbs for pepper and the bark for cinnamon. They both differ from other plants in that they contain some active ingredient that is useful to us. But the real role of herbs is to help a plant survive in its environment.

A little bit of history about herbs and were they originated. Herbs can be traced back into the times of the ancient Egyptians and the ancient Chinese.  There are also references in the Bible and medieval documents that show herbs were used by most households. Growing herbs is something that is very beneficial to gardeners for several different purposes.  Herbs have been valued for centuries for cooking, medicinal purposes as well as the preparation of fragrances. Also, many herbs produce attractive plants which can add to the aesthetics of your garden when mixed in with vegetables or even flowers. Herbs may be used to flavor food, for potpourri, for tea, for medical purposes or to even control pests in the garden.  Herb gardens can be specialized towards one of these specific areas or a mixture of a few different purposes.  They can also be grown in a garden with other species of plants or in containers indoors.

Herb gardens can be grown in different ways such as an indoor herb garden in the kitchen or a small plot in the garden.  Many herbs can grow as border plants in most gardens, but most grow better in plots of their own. If space is a limitation, they also grow very well in window boxes and on sunny window sills.

Herbs thrive in light, loamy, well-drained soil, but they can grow well even in less fertile soil. All herbs, except Sorrel, thrive in alkaline soils and prosper from an application of fertilizer containing some lime applied once a year.

Many people have started to resort to herbal remedies for many diseases. As a result, they have started growing herbs in their garden. If you also want to grow herbs in your own garden, then you should follow certain criteria. This may include the choice of herbs, depending upon the climatic conditions and the availability of water and the fertility of soil. Although growing herbs in a home garden is extremely easy and worthwhile, there is a lot of information you need to know and understand about herbs.
