“Do You Know the Different Types of Herb Garden Plants?
Dear Friend,
Herb garden plants come in annuals, perennials, and biennials like other types of plants. There are so many different types of herbs and each one is different. If you are interested in a specific type of herb, you should research that one to understand the care it needs and how to use it properly. This article will get you started in understanding general different types of herb plants and what they are used for in a home herb garden.
Types of Herb Garden Plants
Know which herb plants or annual or perennial, and make a note of them so you won’t forget. A small spiral notebook is a good place to make comments on the care of each of your herbs. Situate each plant according to height for maximum enjoyment of your herb garden.
A fresh herb garden can be sown from seed so you can buy these from your local nursery. You can also buy small plants fort transplanting but there is nothing more satisfying than doing all the work yourself so try to grow from seed first. If you don’t succeed then try small plants later, but remember to read the label, as some plants such as coriander do not transplant very well.
When you have decided on a location for your herb garden, it’s time to figure out which herbs you’d like to grow. To figure this out, ask yourself why you want to grow herbs.
Herb Garden Plants Around The Home
Is it for cooking, teas, potpourri, fragrance, or a combination of all these? Your purpose of herb garden plants will help in deciding which herb plants you want to grow.
If it’s for cooking, which herbs plants do you currently use?
You could grow these, plus others that have caught your interest in the past. If it’s for any of the other reasons, do some research first to find out what herbs are good for that interest.
You need to remember that most herbs usually like well-drained soil so start your bed with a good layer of gravel that will help drainage. Place your soil on top of this but remember to add some compost into this.
If you have a free draining soil to start with you should be able to manage without the gravel. Make sure your plot is in full sun as many herbs originate in the Mediterranean region.
Annuals like basil, cilantro, and summer savory will not survive a frost. They need to be planted from a seed or a small plant every year. Perennials like sage and winter savory can survive colder temperatures and will return year after year.
Biennial herbs are plants that form leaves in their first growing season and flowers and seed in the second season, then die. Biennial herbs like parsley, angelica, or caraway should be sown in late spring directly into the garden. Prepare the soil first by working it to a fine texture and wet it slightly. Plant the seeds in shallow rows then firm the soil on top of them.
Fine seeds can be planted in a mixture of sand which will allow them to spread more evenly. You can also cover the bed with wet burlap or paper in order to keep the soil moist during germination.
Herbs are also grouped into the categories for which they are used. Culinary herbs are probably the most useful to herb gardeners. They have a huge range of different uses in cooking. Because of their strong flavors, herbs like chives, thyme, basil, sage, savory, and marjoram are generally used in small quantities to add flavor to different types of food.
Parsley is an extremely popular herb that is used mostly as a garnish. Aromatic herbs have pleasant smelling flowers or foliage. Oils from aromatic herbs like loyage, mint, and rosemary can be used to make different types of perfumes, toilet water, or other various scents.
Parts of aromatic herb plants used intact can also be used in the home to scent linens or clothing. They can also be dried and made into potpourri which will enable them to be able to retain their aroma for a long period of time.
Lavender and lemon verbena are great herbs to use for potpourri. Some herbs are also used for medicinal purposes. For centuries herbs have been thought to have the ability to cure the body. Present medical knowledge recognizes that some herbs are beneficial to one’s health, others are overrated. If you plan to use the herbs from your home herb garden for medicinal purposes, be very carefully.
Some herbs are harmless, but others can be dangerous if eaten. Make sure you understand what types of herbs you are using and how to use the properly.
Some herbs are not used for their flavor, power to heal or fragrance. Some herbs are also used for their beauty. Ornamental herbs have brightly colored flowers and foliage.
Many have whitish or various light colored flowers like valerian which has crimson blossoms and borage and chicory which grow gorgeous blue flowers.
While herb garden plants can be categorized into these different categories of uses, many herbs have multiple purposes. For example, mint may be used for cooking, tea, and pest control. Whatever the reason you have an interest in herbs, by understanding herb garden plants you are able to pick the herbs that will be most useful to you.
Herbs are actually one of the easiest plants to grow. You only need to provide them with an effective drainage, sunlight, enough humidity or moisture, and fertile soil.
Even by just meeting these minimal requirements, you will succeed with your herb garden plants in producing a good harvest.

“Who Else Is Ready To Start a Herb
Garden?”
Dear Friend,
To start a herb garden, one of the first decisions you need to make is where to put your herb garden and have a herb garden design in mind. Herbs can also be grown indoors in pots or containers.
Start a Herb Garden Indoors or Outdoors
You can also windowsill herb garden or a hanging baskets herb garden. Growing herbs in pots is not anymore difficult then growing herbs in an outdoor garden. Indoor herb gardens need the same growing requirements that garden herbs need.
All herb plants need three main things in order to grow successfully
Sunlight, soil and water are three things you must have to start a herb garden.
Sunlight is key to growing any type of plant including herbs whether they are grown indoors or in a garden. When you start a herb garden, you should place your potted herb garden in a place that faces south or west to get the best kind of sunlight.
If you want to start a herb garden in your kitchen remember, herb garden needs to be on a windowsill that gets plenty of sunlight. While a window herb garden is fairly low maintenance, you should check the plants at least once a week to see if they need to be watered. Don’t just pour in the water automatically, since one of the most common problems with indoor plants is over-watering. Make sure you test the soil with your finger to see if it feels dry to the touch.
Also, when you start a herb garden you should plan to fertilize your herbs with special plant food spikes during the growing season. After all, since the plants are in containers, they can’t pull any more nutrients from the soil once they’ve used what is there. If you do not have the sunlight, you can use artificial light, but that seems to take away from the naturalness of the process for many gardeners.
When you start a herb garden you will need to water weekly or twice weekly, but do not over water. Fertilizer should be used and should be a slow timed release type such as pellets or sticks and are available at any garden store.
Different types of herb garden designs have different light requirements but, for the most part, all need a sunny location.
Some home herb growers supplement the light source with “grow lamps” or fluorescent lamps. Herbs also need a well drained, not too rich soil to grow in. Add two parts of sterilized potting soil with one part coarse sand or perlite for herbs that are grown in containers. Also, if you are planning to start a herb garden indoors you will also need about an inch of gravel at the bottom of each pot to ensure that the plant has good drainage.
Herb grown in pots indoors can also be supplemented with one teaspoon of lime per 5-inch pot to ensure that the soil is sweet enough for the herbs. Herbs grown in pots also need water. Misting the plants and moistening the pebbles will help to keep the herbs within humid conditions. If you start a herb garden indoors your herbs do need to have more water then herbs that are grown in a garden, but you should avoid getting the roots of the herbs drenched or soggy.
One major advantage for you if you start a herb garden indoors using container is that you have the freedom to move them about as you please. Annual herbs can spend all of their time indoors but, perennial herbs do better if they were to be placed outside during the summer. Although all herbs should be brought inside before the first frost in order to avoid the loss of foliage. This rule is over looked when it comes to mint, chives, and tarragon.
These types of herbs will go into a rest period then form firmer and fresher growth after it is introduced to a light frost. All herbs can be grown in containers but some herbs do better then others. Mint is an herb that needs to be contained or it will take over the garden. Over all it is fairly easy to maintain an indoor herb garden. It keeps the herbs handy and within reach anytime you need them for cooking.
With these tips listed above on how to start a herb garden, you will be able to care for your herbs and ensure a healthy plant. You should also include periodic light feeding and yearly repotting for optimum health of the herbs. You will also have to remember to replant annuals each year and move perennials outdoors when needed.
Start A Herb Garden With The Right Feed
Also remember that if start a herb garden indoors, herb garden is a permanent addition to your home, be sure that you feed your herbs plant food during the spring and summer months. All potted plants use up the nutrients in the soil and need to have them replaced occasionally to stay healthy and happy.
Plus, use your herbs as much as you want as well as harvest them occasionally. It is no secret that pruning plants encourages new growth. This rule also applies to herbs. So when you are ready to start a herb garden and you need herb garden design ideas go to the link below…

“Who Else Is Ready To Get Great
Information on Home Herb Garden and
What To Do When Harvesting Herbs?”
Dear Friend,
You got your home herb garden up and running and now you are thinking about harvesting your herbs for later use. You have planted the herbs and watched them grow and flourish. They are extremely useful in so many ways. But, using herbs from a home herb garden requires a little bit of work at first.
Home Herb Garden Tips:
In order to use the herbs in your home herb garden, you will need to harvest them first. Timing is a huge factor. The wind and the heat can disperse the essential oils of the herbs. You should choose a calm and dry morning during midsummer to harvest your herbs. Fewer oils are produced by the herb on extremely wet days. Harvest the herbs just after the dew has dried form the leaves right before the flowers open.
Harvesting the herb does not mean removing the entire plant. At this point, you are just taking a certain amount of growth for use. You do not need to use the herbs that you are harvesting at the time that you pick them. You can preserve them to use later. Be careful not to take more then one third of the plant’s foliage at one time.
The plant will need a good amount of foliage to re-grow well. You should also inspect the plant for insects and damaged leaves before you harvest it.
Home Herb Garden Preserving Your Herbs
Typically there are three ways that people preserve their home herb garden for later use; drying, freezing, or preserving them in a medium like salt or vinegar. In order to dry herbs you need to bundle six to twelve stems together and remove any foliage near the base of the stems. You can secure the bundle with string.
Hang the bundle in a cool location away from sunlight. If you are looking to dry individual leaves you can place them on a screen or a rack. Remember to turn them often in order for them to dry properly. Some people have turned to using appliances like dehydrators, ovens or microwaves to dry herbs as well although these are less satisfactory ways.
Another point to remember about a home herb garden is that freezing herbs is a fairy simple way to preserve herbs. Cut the herbs into ¼ inch pieces and place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Once the herbs are frozen, you can place them together in a bag and store them in the freezer until use. The third way to preserve herbs is through a medium. For instance, you can cover herbs like chopped mint, basil or tarragon with vinegar and it will be preserved for several months.
Or you can make a flavored salt to preserve herbs by alternating layers of fresh herbs between salt. When completely dry separate the brown herb from the flavored salt and store it in an airtight container. Of course, people often use herbs fresh right out of the garden. Take care cleaning the herbs before they are placed fresh in recipes. In order to keep the herbs in your home herb garden clean, place them in a bowl filled with cool water.
If there is a large quantity of herbs in your home herb garden, you can use the sink. Place about two tablespoons of salt in the water. The salt in the water will drive away insects without damaging the plant. Remove the herbs from the water and dry them in a salad spinner. Each different type of herb has their own list of instructions on how to use, harvest, and chop them.
You need to conduct some research online about your home herb garden. Make sure you do some research into the specific types of herbs you want to use in order to make sure you are growing them correctly. The first thing to consider is the type of soil you have. Certain types of soil can retain moisture for a long time despite the fact that others may dry up quickly. The process the soil can absorb water can help determine if it will dry up quickly or not. When you find that your soil dries out quickly after a rain it is best to find plants that don’t need a great deal of water to survive. Also if the garden soil stays moist for a long period after a rain you will need to find plants that can survive with lots of water. This is simply the first part in choosing the best plants.
The next thing you will want to consider is the degree of sunlight your garden will receive everyday. Take a look at paintball shop. There are plants designed to flourish effectively in direct sunlight. You’ll get plants which may end up dying if they receive too much sunlight during the day. The same goes for shady gardens, meaning gardens that do not get much sunlight but are in shady areas of your property. One remaining thing you have got to remember is that you won’t want to place all your plants too close together. When plants really are way too close together, they may not receive the right amount of water and nutrients to survive. You could also end up killing off a number of the plants as a result. Consequently make sure you disperse your plants out leaving 1 and 1/2 feet to 2 feet of clearance between all the plants. If you would like to have sizeable plants in your back garden, you should have more space between plants as well.
By using the simple tips above you will see that you will be able to grow a beautiful garden with out having to worry about all the plants dying. Stop by techno maker. While you probably won’t put the spade to use every single day that you work in your garden, the days when you have intricate work to do around your plants will make you glad that you have your spade on hand. The spade is an incredible time and effort saving tool for people who have lots of different types of gardening projects. Every garden should have a hose. Even gardeners who don’t plant much and have small gardens need to have a hose. You can use your hose for other things—it is not just for watering your plants. Debris can easily be washed away with a garden hose—and it is gentle enough that your plants will stay safe. Many people put the hose to work washing their cars and watering their lawns as well as using it for garden care.gardening
You also need a wovel. Gardeners can choose between wovels with short handles and wovels with long handles. A wovel is almost like a shovel except for the fact that it has a rounded point. A short handled wovel will help your balance while a long handled wovel does not do this.
The primary purpose of the wovel is to dig holes. They move the soil and lift plants safely without your having to worry about pulling on rooting systems or damaging the root bulb. Wovels can also be used to tamp down dirt as you move your plants or do your seed planting.
Lots of people enjoy gardening! Lots of gardeners take on this hobby because it is soothing and rewarding. This is especially true if you are growing spices, herbs, fruits or vegetables because you can eat them!
Puttering around your own garden can even help you relax at the end of the day or on the weekend. The nice thing about growing your own garden is that it can be done throughout the year, inside and outside and your garden can be as big or as little as you want it to be. When you use the right gardening tools the experience is even better because you get a lot more done and are more free to just enjoy your hard work!

Let The Children Have Their Own Back Garden
Almost certainly one of the best ways to for children to become involved and creative is to have a garden. It truly is almost a no-brainer since it involves children having fun and getting dirty. When you help them decide what plants to cultivate, you will see their excitement when choosing. This article will give you some ideas on how to make your children become interested in the joys of gardening.
While letting your children pick their own plant, have a range that they can select from. You should encourage them to pick flowers or plants with bright colors as this is what they tend to like. Types of vivid flowers that children would enjoy include zinnias and cosmos. They can likewise be overwhelmed by tall and fuzzy, so make sure to have sunflowers. You also want to be sure the plants they decide will not trigger allergic reactions. Though your children may be small, they could actually help with planting the seeds. You can simply have them cover the seed with soil if it is too difficult for them to do the whole process. Having the children make a gardening log is a great way to keep them excited about their garden. They might record their progress or draw what their plants will look like. They could document when they planted and when the seeds began to sprout.
It is advisable to have the garden near where they may be playing so it is easy for them to see how it is going. Provide them with a reason to keep enthusiastic about how their plant is doing. Given that they love playing in the dirt anyway, allow them to help you get the soil ready. Maybe it’s something as basic as breaking up the clumped up soil. Buy them some tools that are their particular size, so they really feel like they are helping. Allow their area of the garden be theirs. Take a photo of each plant, so they will be aware of what to look for when it starts growing. Get everything on a notecard with all the names of your children, so everyone will know they are a part of the garden.
You should also have your children water their own plants. You might have to help them, or at least show them how to do it, so the roots of the plants get watered. A small can that may be used for watering works best. Children are likely to make goof ups as they tend their garden, which is a good way for them to learn. Besides having a good time making a mess, you need to teach your children the importance of cleaning up after they have finished with gardening.
Through providing them some responsibility and freedom, they will have fun and enjoy gardening. Let them get some things wrong, and teach them the right way to learn from all those mistakes.
